Davie Shipbuilding awarded $610 million for icebreakers program

Davie, a shipbuilder located in Levis, Quebec, has been involved in the refit, maintenance, and life extension of the Coast Guard's icebreakers since 2013.

In June 2018, on behalf of the Canadian Coast Guard, Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) awarded a $610-million contract to Davie for the acquisition of three icebreakers and work to prepare the first ship for service. The three icebreakers, Tor Viking, Balder Viking and Vidar Viking, were acquired from Norwegian shipping company Viking Supply Ships.

The first vessel is expected to be operational by the upcoming icebreaking season in December 2018. The second and third vessels is planned to be converted, refit, and available by summer 2019 and winter 2019-2020 respectively.
